Wigs are hot…and in trend!
3 out of 5 women now own wigs as opposed to 10-15 years ago when the trend was sew-ins. The wig industry has grown and is considered to be a multi-billion dollar industry due to the vast majority of women who now own and wear wigs on a daily basis much for the ease and convenience it presents. High quality, beautifully constructed wigs has a way of elevating looks and giving your style game an A+.
However, despite increasing acceptance of wigs by women, there are still those who are doubtful and say they can’t feel comfortable wearing a wig ..partly from the fear of being publicly embarrassed if the wig falls off accidentally or just not knowing how to choose the wig that would best fit their lifestyle.
That being said, if you’re a “newbie” or need some tips on how best to choose a wig, lets help alleviate some of your worries by starting with what-not-to-do when purchasing a wig. So as a guide, here are some mistakes that buyers sometimes make….and later on regret.
- BUYING CURLY HAIR WIG
Curly girls are the prettiest! Oh…how those ringlets look. Turns you into a celebrity and just does a 360 on your overall appearance. Curly hair has an appeal that’s totally sexy. We get it. But if you aren’t knowledgable in detangling and moisturizing hair, there’s a pretty high chance you’re gonna be frustrated 3 days after you wear your weave. Curly hair requires some tweaking, sometimes daily. This can be quite tasking if you aren’t used to devoting time to get your hair in tip top shape (except you wanna have it looking like a bird’s nest on your head).
SOLUTION: Start off with straight and wavy hair textures that are easy to manipulate and comb through. You can even get away for 2 days without combing or touching it (although we won’t recommend this).
- BUYING A LACE FRONTAL WIG
If I was to receive money for every time a client narrated their regret in buying a frontal wig, it would pay for a mini vacation to Seychelles.
In the world of wigs, frontals are the IN-THING. Everyone wants to own one, pepper enemies with one. Yeah! We understand the desire. But frontals aren't your regular bread and butter. It requires some tweaking and camouflaging to look like what its supposed to look like. As a first timer, or someone who doesnt have time to lay baby hairs, or just handling the general routine that a frontal requires, we seriously suggest you NOT to go down this road yet (unless you have a bad-ass stylist on speed dial).
SOLUTION: Lace closures are sturdier and easier to work with. Requires little to no extra effort on your pay to look good and is best for everyday wear. For more parting space, you can choose a 5*5 lace closure which can be customized to look like a frontal.
- BUYING A WIG THAT’S TOO LONG
Long, silky hair is irresistible and if you’re an African with short hair genes like me, you’d know its super duper difficult to grow your hair to an 18-20 inches in this lifetime. So we totally understand when your first impulse will be to fill your shopping cart with 24-30 inches of hair on your first purchase. Err...DON'T!
Anything longer than 20 inches will be extremely hard to manage, especially for someone who’s still getting used to wearing a wig or has zero skills in hair maintenance. Due to that length, you’d most likely be wearing between 300-400 grams of hair which might feel heavy for you and cause you to be “too aware”; an uneasy reminder that you’re wearing a wig.
SOLUTION: Start off with mid-lengths (12-18 inches) which are easier to comb and also won’t make you feel too overwhelmed. It takes a certain confidence level to rock really long wigs and you want to be sure you don’t feel uncomfortable when you wear yours.
- PICKING A BRIGHT COLORED WIG
So you've been seeing this really nice blonde wig on that hair vendor with same skin tone and you think to yourself “ I can definitely rock this”. Or you saw your favorite celebrity looking all chic and classy and you’re considering following her footstep. Hmm..please don’t.
Choosing a red wig or a purple wig for a first timer is like playing a lottery. The only difference is that while lottery tickets cost probably $20 or less, this wig will cost more than $300 and it may not look as what you expected. Total, epic fail!
SOLUTION: Try out natural colors (black, brown) with your first purchase. As you get more confident, you can experiment with highlights, ombres before getting a full blown hair color. Better still, discuss with us (or your stylist) on which hair colors would suit your skin tone.
- BUYING A WIG THAT'S NOT YOUR SIZE
As a Master Wig artist, I’ve had clients complain that their wig doesn’t fit well, seems loose, too big. And when they bring it in for inspection, I realize the wigs are usually not their size/custom made to fit.
Custom made wigs are wigs made specifically for your head shape and size. As all heads are unique and different, its a bit difficult to get a perfect fit with a "one-size-fits-all wig.
SOLUTION:
The best way to ensure your units fit like a glove is to have it custom made. However, if your preference is in manufactured wigs, be sure to hook the adjustable straps, the elastic band and combs for extra fit and snug. Else, your wig might come off in private…or in public. And that's a capital NO-NO!
If you’re going to invest in a high quality unit that you will feel comfortable wearing, last long while making you look amazing, it pays to be careful when making a decision. Trust us, you’ll fall in love more with yourself.
What was your first experience with wigs? Was it a hit or miss? Do leave a comment below we'd love to hear from you.

Love this post. I remember when my first lace frontal unit. It was such a fail. I legit didn’t know what to do or how to make it look like what I see on instagram. I remember trying to use glue and everything turning white on me..I’m better with it now but back then, shit wasn’t funny
Nice post✌️
