The longevity of your wigs is determined by how you care for it. Caring for your extensions goes beyond washing; it starts from how you comb it, what you use to comb it, how much product you use, how you store it and ultimately, how you maintain it. That is why we have put together a list of DOs and DONTs for your hair extensions.
N.B: If you find it difficult maintaining or washing your hair extensions, just pause, take a deep breath, and send an email to thewigrepairshop@gmail.com
DOs
- Wash and condition your wig regularly – minimum every two weeks if you have worn it consistently for two weeks and used product on it. We recommend using V05; its relatively affordable and available in most stores.
- Deep condition your hair regularly – at least once every three weeks
- Use a heat protectant when using heated styling tools to minimise split ends and heat damage which could make your hair frizzy and dry
- Brush your hair only when needed – yea! Excessive brushing could decrease the longevity of your hair
- Brush/comb your wig from the tips to the roots - this helps to reduce shedding that could come from knots and tangles in hair
- Use a wide tooth comb to detangle
- Store your wig in a safe place - either on a mannequin head or in the box
DONTs
- Don't use heat styling tools on your hair without a heat protecant
- Less is more. Applying too much product to your hairs or even using wrong products (serums/pink oil) will only weigh down the hair and leave it greasy.
- Do not sleep with a wet hair. This could cause knotting.
- If you swim with your wig, always remember to wash off with water afterwards. The chlorine in pools has a drying and damaging effect if not washed off
- Do not cut off the wefts on your hair extensions. If you must, ALWAYS ensure you use a weft sealer afterwards.
How to wash and deep condition your hair extensions
- Brush and detangle the wig/hair properly before attempting to dip in water
- Wet the hair thoroughly with lukewarm water.
- Shampoo the hair from the root to tip, using your fingers to distribute the product.
- Rinse well.
- Repeat the shampoo process depending on how much product build up is on the hair.
- Towel dry the hair to remove the excess water.
- Use a deep conditioner/masque of your choice. The keyword here is "generous". Apply it generously, starting from the tips and working your way up to the roots (avoid the weft) using your fingers to distribute the product.
- Wrap hair in a shower cap or a cling film and then wrap the bundle in foil. This creates some sort of heat..its like you're steaming the hair.
- Leave it in a warm place for up to 3 -4 hours.
- Remove the foil and cling film and rinse thoroughly. Ensure all the product has been rinsed out! If not, the hair will feel heavy when dry and wont flow.
- Add a generous amount of leave in conditioner & serum to the hair, focusing on the ends.
- If washing curly hair, use a Denman/Paddle brush to work your way around the hair. This helps to redefine the curls.
- Leave to air dry. If it's a wig, dry on manequin to preserve the shape of the wig
- Style as desired
