Statistics has shown that 8 out of 10 women have no idea on what to do/not-do to maintain and care for wigs.Purchasing a wig is a big investment, especially when its from us. Storing your wig correctly and with the proper care can go a long way towards preserving and ensuring that it continues to look its best for years to come.
DOs
- Wash and condition your wig regularly – minimum every two weeks if you have worn it consistently for two weeks and used product on it.
- Deep condition your hair regularly – at least once every three weeks
- Use a heat protectant when using heated styling tools to minimize split ends and heat damage which could make your hair frizzy and dry
- Brush your hair only when needed as excessive brushing could decrease the longevity of your hair
- Brush/comb your wig from the tips to the roots. This helps to reduce shedding that could come from knots and tangles in hair
- Use a wide tooth comb to detangle if necessary.
- Store your wig in a safe place - either on a mannequin head or satin bag.
DONTs
- Don't use heat styling tools on your hair without a heat protectant. It will surely reduce the longevity of your wigs.
- Less is more. Applying too much product to your hairs or even using wrong products (serums/pink oil) will only weigh down the hair and leave it greasy.
- Do not sleep with your wig. This is why all our wigs are glueless and can be removed every evening before going to bed. Sleeping with your wig could cause knotting.
- If you swim with your wig, always remember to wash off with water afterwards. The chlorine in pools has a drying and damaging effect if not washed off.
- Do not cut off the wefts on your hair extensions. If you must, ALWAYS ensure you use a weft sealer afterwards. This will prevent shedding as you wear and style your wigs.
KEEP AWAY RULES
All our Perucas are constructed to last years. However, there are certain places and conditions that you should try and keep them away from. If possible, store your wigs away from dust, fire and heat...yes you read right..heat! At least, not without a good heat protectant. These things can dull the color of your wig and degrade it, making it more likely to fall apart. In addition to dust and sunlight, pets and small children should be kept away from your wig as well!
CARING FOR YOUR WIG
With maximum care, your wigs can last up to a 2 years or even longer depending on how often they are worn, styled, and most importantly, what products are used on them. It is true that your wigs don’t have a natural hydration source like your own hair does i.e natural oils from your scalp aren't moisturizing the hair strands, and thus keeping them manually moisturized and reducing dryness is very crucial, but the type and quantity of products to be used on them should be mild and aqt best, minimal.
Sulphate-free shampoos are best recommended for washing your wigs thereafter followed by a good basic or deep conditioner depending on the routine treatment.
Argan oil is a light-weight oil which can be used but if not found, good ol' Coconut oil is also a nice alternative. It's advised to use just 1 to 2 drops of oil, and preferably to be applied on hair when wet. (after a conditioner is used)
Leave -in conditioners are a must-have as they keep the hair in soft, brush-able and silky state even in dry or hot climates.
USE A WIG STAND/MANNEQUIN
The best way to store your wigs is to use a wig stand or a mannequin..preferably the latter. This is because a mannequin head resembles a human head and thus helps to keep the wig to maintain its style and shape and saves you time and stress in the morning when getting dressed. Even if you don’t have the room to keep lots of mannequin heads or stand, invest in at least one stand or mannequin to store the wig you use most often.
LONG TERM STORAGE
Let's say you have about 6 to 7 Perucas and as you can't possibly wear all wigs at the same time, you need to store it and ensure its nice and ready for when you want to rock it. There are 4 tips for long term storage:
- Get a custom wig box that's sturdy and can prevent dust.
- Brush and style the wig as desired. Use little or no product when styling
- Putting a tissue paper at the crown of your wig to help maintain the shape, fold your wig in half from ear to ear
- Pack in box and safely put away.
